This look’s a little tribute to Berlin’s street art and graffiti. I love the way the city embraces its graffiti—especially in the districts of Kreuzberg and Neukölln. Some people can’t let go of the idea that graffiti and street art are ugly or dirty, but I think this is pretty old-fashioned. Berlin’s all about graffiti—it’s part of its character, part of its essence and for me definitely part of its appeal. Berlin isn’t about being whitewashed and contained and pure. It’s messy and imperfect and exciting. There’s paint splashed on every surface, art and writing covering every wall, and the streets are awash with expression.
Both my top and skirt are from Humana—a large secondhand store with branches around Germany. The skirt is from one of the three Berlin stores. I love the eighties graffiti pattern scribbled over the fabric—the bold and slightly crazy colours immediately caught my eye. The high waist is flattering and the fit around the legs is comfortably loose so that, even though it’s a pencil skirt, I can walk and sit comfortably.
I found the top at a Humana in Dresden, on a girls’ trip out of town. I always get drawn to heavily patterned clothing and my wardrobe can increasingly seem like the clothes of a mismatched lunatic. When I do buy plain clothes, they tend to be bright colours, and when I saw the electric green of this top, I knew it had to be mine. Happily, it matches a lot of things in my wardrobe and has become a staple.
I’m carrying my current go-to backpack that’s super light and durable. I got it from Repeater—a shop in Neukölln selling great new and vintage clothing and accessories.
My earrings are from my favourite accessory shop—Sunday Social in Brisbane. You’ll see their name pop up on this blog a lot because I have a slightly out-of-control collection of their amazing earrings. My sunglasses and boots are both online purchases, from ASOS.
